Welcome to the 2012-2013 School Year!

Summer has been fantastic, but it has been great to get back into the swing of things at Molalla Elementary! There are many new changes for our school, but all seem super exciting!

Firstly, MRSD welcomed Tony Mann as new Superintendant. He welcomed staff this past Monday with a truly inspirational and motivating presentation! I am excited to see what his leadership will bring to the district.

Secondly, our district has finally adopted some new programs. This year we will be using both new reading and math programs. For reading, we will be using the program called "Treasures". There are some amazing technology components and I think students will be excited to read the variety of stories within our textbook.

For math, we will be using "My Math". Like Treasures, My Math has some amazing technology components and a lot of good opportunities for school and home practice! MES was lucky to have PTC donate Smart boards to all classroom teachers. So I am excited to learn about using our new form of technology along with our new math and reading programs!

It was great to meet many of you during our Open House/ Ice Cream Social this evening as well! Tuesday is quickly approaching! During our typical school day, email is ultimately the best way to reach me. On Tuesday I will be sending home registration packets (for those families still needing to update information) as well as a form I like to have on hand with your contact information.

I strongly believe that your child's education is a team effort! Your support is wanted, appreciated and much needed. I am excited to collaborate with you, your child, and my fellow colleagues from MES to provide the best education possible for your 4th grader! Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns throughout the year!

Also, be sure to continually check my blog. This is the easiest and most earth friendly method to communicate with you about events and classroom needs! Again, I look forward to working with your child and your family this school year. =-) See many of you Tuesday! Have a great weekend!

Pink Basket- Basket Bingo

Each year our PTC hosts Basket Bingo. Each class is responsible to have a basket with different items to serve as a prize. This year our theme will be the “All Things Pink”. Any item that is pink will work. We ask these items are in new and in good condition. Some ideas are candy, gardening tools, toys, etc. The dollar store or Bi-mart would be good places to check. Any donation would be great. In event you would like to contribute but are unable to make it to a store, cash donations would work as well. We hope to see you at Basket Bingo which will be Friday, April 20th. Please look to the MES newsletter or fliers home for the time. Thanks!

Upcoming Field Trips

We have a few field trips possibly being scheduled... Once we have the official okay I will send home permission slips and see who might be interested in chaperoning. If you would like to chaperone for either or both field trips, please contact the office ASAP.

You will need to find out if you have a current background check through the district and also double check to see if you have completed the online courses required. I will accept chaperones with complete checks first... Waiting on those who are not officially signed up. To assure you being able to chaperone, please check as soon as you can. Thanks in advance!

Adventure to Fitness

Until the end of the year, every Thursday our class will be doing Adventure to Fitness. Its an indoor interactive video where students can exercise in our classroom. This works great with our very limited time in the gym. Here are some links you guys can use at home. WIth this in mind, be sure your child wears the appropriate shoes Monday and Thursdays. If you have a spare pair of tennis shoes you would like to keep for your child, I will find a space in the classroom. Please put them in a bag or shoe box. Thanks!

Scholastic Online Ordering Information

Scholastic Book Clubs Ordering Information
www.scholastic.com/bookclubs
Class Activation Code: H4D22

Dear Parent,

This year our class will be ordering books from Scholastic Book Clubs! Each month I'll send home a flyer filled with affordable books just right for your child's age and reading level. Kids read more when they choose their own books, so I encourage you to let your child help make selections.

You might remember flipping through the Scholastic flyer when you were in school, eagerly circling your choices, and handing the form to the teacher. Your kids can do the same, but you can also order books online, which is simple, convenient, and saves time. Please see the message from Scholastic below to learn how to order online and how it benefits our classroom.

Thank you,

Ms. Raethke

We at Scholastic Book Clubs are excited to tell you about our Web site.

  • When you order online, you get thousands more books to choose from, including favorite authors and series, plus exclusive editions of the hottest new books.
  • Every order placed online earns rewards for your child's classroom.
  • You pay with a credit card on our secure Web site, saving time for you and your child's teacher.

To start ordering online, follow these simple steps:

  1. REGISTER at Scholastic Book Clubs' secure Web site (www.scholastic.com/bookclubs), and create your own User Name and Password.
  2. ENTER the onetime Class Activation Code above to link you to your child's classroom and teacher recommendations.
  3. BROWSE the wide selection of books with your child.
  4. PAY safely and securely for your selections using your credit card.

The Oregon Humane Society is offering a variety of contests for local area school-aged children.

From there, you can find detailed information on the contests.

For 4th grade there are two contests students can enter...

Poster Contest- Adopt a Pet and Make It Your Best Friend
Story Contest- I Know My Pet is a Part of the Family Because...

Entry rules can be found at the link above.

Storybird.com

At a training I went to on January 3rd I learned about a fantastic program online. Students can access it from home or the Molalla Public Library. Its called www.storybird.com and there students can create and read a variety of stories. Artists post artwork and from there students' creativity can bloom! It's great. I am going to continue giving lessons on using storybird at school but feel free to have your child check it out if you have home access. Please email or call me with any questions.

Thanks!
